A Little Nudge

Today was slow and quiet. As I busied myself around the house I noticed my sweet Ollie looking longingly out the window at the snow sparkling in the sun. I quietly stopped what I was doing and helped the boys into their snow gear. Three pairs of boots, and a couple of zippers later and they were out rolling around in the glittering, wet snow.

I shoveled off the back deck in just my long sleeved shirt as the boys giggled and played. They made tracks around the entire yard, bounced the ice off the trampoline and dug the sled out of the corner. Watching them play was a nice break from dishes and the regular hum-drum of household chores.

The sun warmed our faces and our hearts and we came in feeling more joyful than when we went out. Life is made up of little moments like these and I am so grateful I listened when I felt that little nudge to put things on hold and enjoy my boys! They grow so fast!

Saturday Skate

This morning we woke to the most beautiful Winter's day. The warm temperatures called us outdoors for some fresh air and sunshine. The kids dug out their skates and we walked up the street to the pond. As we were lacing up our skates the sweetest man came out of his backyard with a snowblower and cleared off the entire pond for us! The littles were all pretty excited, especially Mr. Hyrum! He loves being on his skates and has improved so much since last Winter thanks to his roller-blades. He went around that ice lickity-split at high speed. He still hasn't learned to stop, so when it came time for that he would just throw himself to the ground in a slide. He was totally in his element though and loved every second! The others enjoyed themselves for shorter stints of time, before complaining of sore feet. Fin tried his skates for a few minutes with Daddy and then begged to put his boots back on. Ollie wandered around the ice, crawled through the snow, and enjoyed exploring. He loves being outside and was pleased to have some independence! After lunch the big kids walked up to the pond and laced up their skates for a second go. This time they brought their sticks and passed the puck around. I walked over after the little one's woke from their nap and hardly recognized them as they sped around the ice and gave smooth crisp passes. We are looking forward to warmer weather and more skating this week!!

Little Things

The month is moving forward, time keeps ticking on. Though my body is tired from the late nights and little boys who refuse to sleep, I feel renewed with the new year as I strive to cherish my littles and count my blessings. For the last six years we've always had a new baby and a busy toddler. Having so many littles relatively close in age has come with it's fair share of joys and challenges, but lately I've been enjoying finding myself again as I emerge from the piles of diapers and laundry that have consumed me for the last couple of years. I have been able to really savor my time with Oliver as he learns and grows. He is at such a fun stage!  In an effort to preserve a little snapshot of our life right now, I've been jotting down little moments that happen throughout each day to remember for later.

The mornings are frigid and cold leaving us wishing that we could snuggle in our beds. Reese jumps on everyone's bed first thing, tail wagging, tongue licking. After she's said 'hello' to everyone, she slides across the hardwood excitedly and leaps into her bed in the kitchen where she watches the hustle and bustle of the morning routine. I turn up the heat and the littles all grab blankets and gather on the vent to warm up. Ollie tugs on the puppy bed and the two of them play at my feet while I make breakfast and pack lunches.

Hyrum gives me his morning hug and I notice he's outgrown his jeans by at least an inch and they have holes in both knees. I make a mental note to pick him up a few new pairs this week.

Ollie giggles from his booster at the table as he tries to spoon his porridge into his mouth. He scrunches his nose and makes funny faces at the kids leaving us all laughing so hard our tummies ache. He meets our grins with a squeal of a giggle that bubbles up from the very bottom of his adorable, round belly.  I clear his bowl and kiss his sticky face because those cheeks of his are just to die for right now. It's a good thing he's cute though because he is also kind of a drama king. He has mastered the floor dive and uses it often when life seems unfair or he doesn't get what he wants.

The rest of our morning is filled with play time, school work, snacks and washing sticky toddler hands under a tap of warm water. The two little boys go for a nap shortly after lunch, leaving Joe on his own to play. He is the middle child and I've recently discovered that he is really not used to playing on his own. When I turn off the TV and put away the electronics, he's not sure what to do with himself. We usually fill in that time with a game of checkers, war, uno or some baking.

When Finley wakes us he likes to pretend he's mute. Everything is done with pointing, nodding and guess work. He tugs at my shirt sleeve to get my attention and then acts out what he wants to eat or do. He says "I love you" a thousand times a day and gives the tightest squeezy hugs and the best kisses. He is always full of affection and love.

When the kids get home from school they crowd around the little table in the kitchen, playing a huge game of war with the cards. It's exciting to see them getting along so well, but a part of me aches at the sight because it means they are growing up! They are so lucky to have each other and I love that they get along most of the time.

Some of my favorite moments of the day are when we are all crowded around the kitchen counter making up a batch of cookies. The kitchen feels cozy and warm. The children chatter and ramble on loudly. There is poking, fighting, hugs, goofing off. The memories we make together in the kitchen are simply the best.

If the weather is warm the big kids run up the street to grab some friends and head to the hill for sledding. They are getting so independent, it's fun to see.

We are back in swimming lessons and I managed to get all four kids into lessons around the same time. We end up being at the pool for just over an hour start to finish. Finley is loving his first unparented session. Joe and Hyrum are in the same class just because it works better with the timing of lessons. Camilla is in level three this time around and told me that she has to swim really far!

When we get home my heart swells as I watch Hyrum unzip his baby brothers coat. Next, he plops Ollie between his legs on the floor, bends his body close and reaches his long, growing arms around to tug off Ollie's boots. When he's finished he ruffles Ollie's hair with a, "there ya go, buddy."

I spend most of my afternoons trying to avoid the constant rain of nerf gun bullets. They stick to my windows and bounce off my walls as I make dinner. The boys run around loudly. It's complete mayhem. I end up stepping in sticky remnants of a strawberry multigrain bar as I wipe down the table. I hop on one foot over to the kitchen sink to wash it off and am joined a few seconds later by a little boy who's been crawling all over the floor and also needs the sticky wiped from his foot.

After dinner (and asking them to eat their dinner over and over), they get to work on their jobs. I made up a new chore wheel the other day and so far it seems to be doing the trick. Listening to the clanging of dishes as Hyrum rinses and loads and the hum of little workers makes my heart happy. Camilla hangs out in the nursery with a freshly bathed Oliver while I fold the last load of laundry on the boys bed. She is such a responsible little eight year old and so helpful! The giggles escape under the door and bring a smile to my face.

We all gather for night prayers to finish off the day. Daddy asks someone to say it and Finley protests, "No peaaaaaaaaaar!" (No fair). While we listen to the prayer, Ollie runs around the circle tackling unsuspecting siblings who have their arms folded and heads bowed. The dog joins in on the game and barks and pounces around while the rest of us try to stay reverent.

The days are full and tiring, but the little arms around my neck, the chubby toddler hand wrapped around my finger, and the sloppy kisses make it all worth it!

Simple Pleasures

When the wind is blowing, the snowflakes are flying, and the trees are dancing, the little boys tuck in under warm handmade quilts for an afternoon nap. Mamma relishes in the quiet by curling up beneath a crochet project and adding row after row. Working with my hands brings me such joy and stillness that can't be achieved any other way.

Resolutions

The start of a new year often brings about an air of change and a deeper desire to do better.  Lately I've found myself pondering the hopes of my heart and my vision for the new year. As an avid journal writer, goal setting and reflection have always been an important part of my life. Without them there would be no purpose to each day. If you've already fallen off the bandwagon this month, hopefully you have a dear friend like mine to give you some encouragement and help you see that each day is a new opportunity to be better than the last.

After a lot of thought I've decided that my "word" for 2018 is going to be time. I love this word because it encompasses so many different aspects of my life that I want to be better at. I want more time to be still, more time to read (alone, with the kids, and with Mike), more time to learn new things, more time to ponder. I crave more time to write and journal and collect my thoughts. I will be making more time to love and show it through service and extra snuggles with the littles. I want more time to stand in a sun-lit window and warm my soul. I long for more time to enjoy nature. I need more time unplugged from the constant noise of the world. Sometimes life can feel so rushed, and busy, and chaotic... And it's become so normal for it to be this way. This year I just want to slow things down a little and make time for important and meaningful things. I really want to relish in this season of life before these kids grow up too much more and head off on new adventures of their own.

I'm excited to really watch how I spend my hours each day this year. I've already found myself thinking is this a productive and uplifting way to spend your time? I've already implemented some small changes and I feel so much better about life after just this last week. For starters (don't laugh) I let Mike pick my facebook password which means that I am only able to log in and scroll in the evenings most of the time. I've found social media to be a huge time waster for me this last year and I really want to change that! The funny part is that I really don't miss it. I get a whole lot more done during the day and I'm not as snappy with the kids because I'm more focused. So if you want to get in touch I'll be (hopefully) keeping up with the blog and hanging out over on instagram. Ha! I'm also trying really hard to get up before the kids to make that time in the morning a little bit more meaningful either by studying my scriptures (if there's time) or just being a happier mommy.

Last week I woke up to a text from a friend. She sent me a quote that has been super thought provoking over the past few days.

"If I were Satan...I would keep women so distraught and distracted that they would never find calming strength and serenity...catching them in the crunch of trying to be superhuman instead of realistically striving to reach their individual purpose and unique God-given potential. We must have the courage to be imperfect."
~Patricia Holland

This year I'm looking forward to taking time, slowing down, and finding that calming strength and serenity that's offered to us each day. Here's to a year filled with novels to be devoured, blankets to be crocheted, kids to wrap my arms around, relationships to be strengthened, and service to be given.

Happy Sabbath

We woke to a beautiful blue sky morning! There was lots of changes at church today with new teachers and kids moving up to new classes. Finley is officially a Sunbeam and gets to go to primary with his older siblings! I had to snap a picture of them all to document it because they all woke up looking older. Hyrum is taller than his big sister now! Joe was being goofy and kept making funny faces instead of giving me a smile. He's such a character that boy. Ollie just wanted to run away and play. Outside is his favorite place to be. By some miracle I got a quick shot of all of them looking at the camera! It's so funny seeing their big personalities shine through in the picture. Our Sabbath was wonderful and I so enjoyed watching Finley soaking in the Primary experience. His big brother took such great care of him and I loved seeing Hyrum standing next to him with his strong arms around Fin's shoulders to help him be brave. Happy Sabbath!

Costco

We recently renewed our Costco card after a long stint of being without one. Since then I think I've been twice. I got all ambitious today and decided to take all FIVE kids to Costco. It was chaos right from the get-go. When we pulled up someone else was getting out of their truck beside us just as I opened the van door for everyone to pile out. He decided to wait in his truck until we were all out which meant I had to make everyone hustle. I turned around to thank the kind soul for waiting only to discover that I knew him from church! The kids skipped across the muddy, puddled parking lot and into the front doors. The dear man ended up having to wait once again as I loaded everyone into or onto the cart and fumbled around my wallet for my costco card. I waved him by because I knew we'd be a while!

With Ollie sitting in the seat, Fin standing on the end and the boys hopping on and off the sides, we made our way to the baking section to start our grand tour. "Can we have cookies?" they ask. "No, we're getting hot dogs at the end remember?" We made our way around the busy aisles with our extra large and extra full cart. They spotted a sample table just as I rounded the aisle to the meat section. "But MOM! SAMPLES!" they all protest. "Yes, I'll turn around as soon as I grab what I need from this aisle." We lucked into trying a bunch of different things as we weaved our way up and down the aisles. Mango juice, yogurt, popcorn.... The samples really make the trip to Costco just a tiny bit more bearable.

As we made our way to the checkout we were greeted by the longest lines I've ever seen. All of the cashiers were on and each had at least ten people in line. We pulled into the shortest one we could find and waited....and waited. Finley started hanging off the end of the cart almost bumping into the sweet lady in front of us. When Joe wasn't pushing everyone's buttons he was folding himself in half to fit underneath the cart. Before long the baby was screaming and I started a game of "pat-a-cake" to keep him relatively quiet. Finley started making dinosaur noises from the end of the cart and Hyrum kept getting in everyone else's space and adding to the nose. After all of the fighting, poking, yelling, and baby screaming we finally made it through the checkout.

I had promised the kids we would grab some hot dogs on our way out for Dinner, since Daddy was working late.  One look at the hot dog line-up and I was kicking myself for even mentioning it. I took Ollie out of the cart since those have to stay out of the line. Camilla and Fin hung out next to it to keep an eye on things. Hyrum stood nicely next me in line while Ollie wailed on my hip. Joe ran back and forth giggling like a mad man making me regret my decision even more.

We managed to find an empty table to cram into and eat. With the baby still on my hip I managed to get ketchup and mustard on every hot dog and bring them drinks. Just as I was about to stuff my face with another bite so as not to prolong our stay, a friend walked over to say hi. Things finished off relatively smoothly considering how busy it was. After I finished loading groceries and kids into the van I shut my door and let out a deep breath of relief. I probably won't be back for another couple of months (or at least until I forget about this visit).

I finished off my day enjoying a cup of tea with a hint of peanut butter (because sometimes I use the same knife when I make PB&honey sandwiches).

First Hair Cut

Our new years day wasn't overly exciting. It was cold, and we all just wanted to snuggle up and relax. In the late morning I finally decided that it was time to cut Ollie's hair. I trimmed the back and a little bit around the ears. I am going to miss his little curls when his hair is wet. He looks so grown up now!
